SOUTH BUCKS WARGAMES GROUP |
A brief history of SWARG
(AKA Wycombe warband)
The story of SWARG starts in 1990 when after moving to High Wycombe I placed a postcard in the local gaming shop “Not Just Stamps” looking for opponents.
The one & only reply I got was from the late Charles (Karl) Rieveley, a veteran gamer from the days of Don Featherstone et al. Charles was heavily into Napoleonics. One night, when he was (again)just about to rout my left flank, he suggested we start a club. We again placed an advert in Not Just Stamps this time thankfully with a bit more success.
Having gathered a few like minded souls we searched for a venue, here my darling wife sprang to our rescue. She was attending keep fit classes at a local hall & happened to overhear that they had a free night available. So we now had a membership & a venue & our first meeting took place in May 1992. I seem to recall 2mm DBA & Napoleonics being played & that I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The other guys must have too because they came back next time!
Since then we have like most clubs gained & lost members, the current membership (July 2002) is 19 plus one “virtual” member who registers for competitions as “Wycombe warband”. We have few rules “turn up, play & pay” seems to sum it up.
At Christmas we usually have a “silly” game chariot racing, DBA scramble & a quiz. The garnd prize for the game being the “chocolate orange of honour”.
Keep rolling sixes!
